On Sunday 18th May, a team of enthusiastic Clarity Environmental volunteers rolled up their sleeves and headed to the Moulsecoomb Allotments in Brighton to help tackle a forgotten patch of land that had become a hotspot for discarded rubbish and overgrowth.
Partnering with the Moulsecoomb Allotment and Horticultural Society (MAHS), the Clarity team braved nettles, brambles and blisters to dig, rake and clear an area that had inadvertently become a forgotten plot. What was once an unkempt and neglected space is now well on its way to becoming a usable community area.
Over the course of the day, the team filled two 850 litre sacks of green waste – ready to be composted and returned to the soil – as well as multiple sacks of broken ceramics, rock, glass and other debris. Among the more surprising discoveries were old carpets, a garden umbrella, an electric lighting system, a plastic wheelbarrow, and even a perfectly functional garden spade, now ready for its second life.
The clean-up is part of a wider ambition to transform the area into a peaceful space for the local community to relax, grow, and connect with nature – aligning with Clarity Environmental’s commitment to sustainability, wellbeing, and positive local impact.
“It was a tough but incredibly rewarding day,” said Clarity volunteer James Ascott. “There’s something satisfying about turning a neglected space into something with real potential for the community.”
The Moulsecoomb Allotments have been a vital part of Brighton’s growing culture for decades, offering residents a green sanctuary in the heart of the city. You can find out more about the allotments and how to get involved here.
