On Sunday, March 16, volunteers from Clarity and their families collaborated with Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) for a beach clean between Brighton Marina and Brighton Pier. This initiative, part of the Million Mile Clean campaign, saw participants enthusiastically combing miles of shoreline, collecting over 56kg of polluting materials, including paper, plastic, glass, and even an abandoned scooter.
Surfers Against Sewage is a UK-based marine conservation and campaigning charity dedicated to protecting oceans, waves, beaches, and marine life. Established over 30 years ago, SAS has grown into a nationwide movement, uniting and empowering communities to take action against threats to the marine environment.
The Million Mile Clean is an annual initiative by SAS, aiming to mobilize 100,000 volunteers each year to clean 10 miles of blue, green, or urban spaces, collectively covering a million miles by 2030. This campaign not only addresses plastic pollution but also fosters community spirit and promotes outdoor activity.
After the clean-up, the polluting materials are taken away and analysed, with data collected on the types and quantities of waste found. This information contributes to SAS’s brand audit, which identifies the most polluting companies and holds them accountable for their environmental impact.
Natalie Rea, Chief Executive Officer at Clarity Environmental, commented on the event: “We are incredibly proud to have taken part in this beach clean alongside Surfers Against Sewage. Protecting our environment is a core value at Clarity, and events like this allow us to make a tangible difference while raising awareness about plastic pollution. The enthusiasm and commitment shown by our volunteers were truly inspiring, and we look forward to continuing our support for initiatives that promote sustainability and cleaner communities.”
