Ahead of this year’s Great British Beach Clean, the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) is holding a Great British Beach Quiz, in association with Clarity Environmental. We are proud to be supporting the quiz, with a sponsorship donation provided by our Clarity Cares committee in honour of the campaign to protect and improve our oceans.
Hosted by the charity’s Ocean Ambassador Tom “The Blowfish” Hird, the family quiz will take place at 7pm on Friday 28th August, with fun, prizes and facts all in support of the Marine Conservation Society.
The Great British Beach Clean is an annual event run by the MCS. This year it is being held from 18th–25th September 2020 and like many events, it looks a little different in 2020. Rather than encouraging volunteers to find a beach clean happening near them, the MCS is calling on individuals to adopt a 100m stretch of beach and organise their own beach cleans, with smaller groups of friends, family and ‘bubbles’, in line with government guidance. Last year’s campaign saw over 500 items collected per 100m of beach, with nearly 11,000 volunteers taking part.
With 80% of litter on the UK’s beaches coming from areas inland, via parks, rivers and streets, those not able to get to the beach this year are encouraged to take part in a new Source to Sea Litter Quest and try to spot common beach litter items in their local area. The MCS says data collected this year will be vital to pushing for a ‘green recovery’ from coronavirus.
