In alignment with the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) regulations, OPRL (On-Pack Recycling Label) has mandated that by March 2026, all consumer-facing primary and shipping packaging must adhere to the Recycle Now labelling standard. This requirement excludes plastic film, which will fall under the obligation by 2027.
OPRL has revised its labelling guidelines to incorporate the feedback and decisions stemming from the EPR consultations. These updates include a transition in the wording from “Don’t Recycle” to “Do Not Recycle,” aligning with the government’s response to EPR consultations.
Additional modifications reflect the eligibility criteria for mixed polyolefin films, which can now be collected at front-of-store locations. Furthermore, products such as mono-polymer toothpaste tubes have been approved for the “Recycle” label, thanks to advancements in collection and sorting technologies.
As governmental policies under EPR evolve, it is anticipated that the OPRL labelling system will undergo further adjustments. Companies responsible for packaging under these regulations must ensure their labels comply with the specified timelines.
Notably, the reforms include an exemption for small businesses; however, this does not extend to labelling requirements. Manufacturers and retailers supplying packaging to entities with an annual turnover below £1 million and handling less than 25 tonnes of packaging annually are still obligated to implement the appropriate labelling on their products.
